I haven't been posting lately for a whole host of reasons. The shop underwent a little reno...which turned kinda big. Taking down slat wall and hauling it to the local Christian school with the help of my besties husband. I could not survive without my friends Julie & Greg! Love you both! Ok! Ok...I digress ;) Painting, moving, lighting, and new window display. You get the picture...or at least it's in your mind.

So the shop underwent a reno, Bitty was under the weather as well as my right arm at the shop Pam. Several things sold, so several new things needed to come in...a delivery..or two and the arrival of a massive shipment of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, (YEA!). Let's see, seems like I'm missing an event or two, oh yeah, life happened:) After all, I am married with children and life would be SO mundane if it weren't for my ever supportive family (Love you bunches and bunches, bushels and bushels! Like apples and bananas and oranges but more!) You get the picture...or at least it's in your mind.

You see, I did actually take pictures of this all. The before, after, in process, sold items and new items. The pictures weren't the greatest, but hey, I gottem! One glitch...I've been using Picasa forever with no major problems. Well, as you maybe could tell from my recent, or not so recent posts, my pictures are TINY and blurry! I haven't changed anything that would cause this, or at least not that I can pin point. I moved several of the pics to Picnik, yes I know they are closing. The pictures were crisp and as good as they could possibly get considering when I was snapping away I didn't realize extension cords, price tags, or semi tailors that were passing by the store front that I now have forever captured in my blurry little pics ;) The glitch is when I upload them to the blog, they rotate. So if you turn your head to the left 90 degrees, you'll get the picture;)

Perhaps one of my wonderful readers will take pity on me and send me a fix to my blurry rotated problem. That would be so AWESOME! Until I get this fixed, I hope ya'll are doing great and are inspired to create something wonderful that makes your heart sing with joy!

Antoinette

Though I loved how this little chair looked as it was, time was none too kind to her. Luckily, I easily could see the potential in her curvy legs, intricate carved detailing, solid wood frame, and gold paint and brought her home. After all, she's the perfect recipe for paint!

With the new Annie Sloan Chalk Paint color just out, Antoinette, I knew exactly the color I was going to paint her! The upholstery, that's a whole different story! ;)

After a complete strip down of old tapestry on top of even older tapestry, batting, straw, and springs I gave little Antoinette a wipe down and started in with paint. After a light distressing to reveal the gold paint that lie underneath, I finished her with a loving rub down of clear wax. I love this chair. I love how even after all these years and all the bumps she's endured, she's still beautiful, still strong, and most importantly still around for many to enjoy for many years to come. Antoinette is very sturdy and I could sit in it and enjoy the fruits of my labor, but simply looking at this beautiful chair refreshes my soul. What refreshes your soul?

Spring is in the air~

So, it's really not. A girl can dream though right?! :)

This little cutie is a smokers cabinet that I decided to splash some real spring color on. The period this cabinet comes from is that wonderful 1940's waterfall. There is enough of this quality built furniture for everyone in America to have at least one piece. Though the aesthetic isn't something I'm a big fan of. why not paint it?!

The base color is a mix of Antibes, Cream, and Arles. It came out in this bright green apple-ie color and I just love it! Nothing says spring like a nice bright cherry green! Using a dry brush technique, Cream emphasizes the details easily without too much effort. As the finishing touch, I painted the pull in Cream, gave the entire piece a light distressing and a hand rubbed clear wax finish.

It's just the splash of bright color we need here in Northern Illinois where it's 41 one day and 10 the next! Hope your enjoying a little bit of sunshine today! If not, paint yourself some! :)

Chair Love!

Isn't it strange...maybe interesting would be a more suitable word...:) when you find your niche and it's nothing like what you "thought" it would be? I love furniture...no surprise there! Dressers, stools, tables of all shapes and sizes, stepbacks, hoosiers, hutches, blanket chests, and foot rests clutter my storage and studio. Throw in the occasional lamp, chandi, and magazine rack along with a chotchkie or two, and you will find me right at home.

It seems to me I have centered my picks around large pieces for the most part so when I finally realized my niche, I had to laugh to myself as this niche of mine is truly fitting to my personality. Now you may be wondering what this niche is and how I've come to the realization that it is "my niche". Well, it's chairs. I have brought in several, SEVERAL chairs and they never last long. I do my best to get them cleaned up, painted and reupholstered, but sometimes they don't last long enough for me to even get them wiped down!

I love chairs, and all kinds. I love the ones I can curl up in with my Bitty Girl or good book and cozy blanket. I also love the ones with the sexy curvy legs that are carved and the ones that are simply sophisticated. Oh! And let's not forget about the ones with the tapestry's...those are beautiful as well! It doesn't really matter to me what they look like, I find beauty in them all. Perhaps that's why chairs are my niche!

I hope you enjoy this little cutie! She's not too old...probably about my age lol~ I replaced her padding, batting and fabric and trim after I painted her with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Coco with a Old White was on top :)

Top 10 Must Have Tools #9

I hope you enjoyed my #10 post. Maybe even some of you have gone out and bought the Kobalt Multi Bit Ratchet Screwdriver...I'd love to hear how it's working for ya!

On to #9!

#9. Ball Jars

Yes, old Ball Jars! Not just the blue ones, and they don't even have to be old. New ones work just as well. Now I know what you're thinking. "What in the world is she doing with so many jars?" Well, lots of things!

1. Store all that hardware in a large mouth clear jar. Tighten lid and store filled jar in the drawer of the piece the hardware came from. You'll never get to the last drawer and find you misplaced the last pull!

2. Store all those left over screws in. I like to keep a jar of flat head screws so if I have ~~lost~~ misplaced one from a previous project, I have a jar I can go to. Having all the same hardware and screws adds value to a piece. I'm all about the details, and having matching screws is one of my quirks...

3. Glazes! What do ya do when there's just a smidg of glaze left? Store it in a jelly jar! Same goes for custom created paint colors and washes. Use an address label to mark what's in it and it's recipe.

4. Store your brushes upright in an empty jar. Save those bristles from bending!

5. Ever left a brush out for...oh say 6 months...with latex paint? Yeah....well, if you should ever do just that, pint jars are great for soaking that ol brush in (dare I say...) brush cleaner. It's glass, so it will clean up beautifully! It's small...so no need to go overboard and use the whole bottle on one brush. It's glass...it won't melt like some plastics. It's the ultimate recyclable!

These are just a few examples of how and when I use glass jars. Again, they don't have to be the antique blue with the bale. They can be the small mayonnaise or jelly jar that you were going to pitch in the trash. Remember? It's the ultimate recyclable!

Just an update!

With just 2 days till Christmas, I thought I should give an update post.

First, I would like to say Merry Christmas to you and your family. I pray you have found time in the busyness of cooking, shopping, creating, and fellowship-ing to simply take a long moment or two and enjoy your family. I look at my 13 year old daughter and my 14 year old son, and try my best to embed their crooked little smiles into my brain. Oh how time has changed them and though I wish I could turn back the hands of time to steal a few more moments, I know that wouldn't be fair to them.

Secondly, my Top Ten Must have Tools series took a back seat when I received word of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Give-A-Way. It will return next week with an unbelievable #9! I'm sure you won't want to miss this series!

Third...It has been so exciting to meet so many new blog friends and in person too! I truly understand the hesitation some of you feel when contemplating your first purchase of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint....I too was in your shoes! But seriously, I am as ~~cheap~~ frugal as a person can get and I wouldn't endorse, promote, chat-up a product if I truly didn't think it was all that and a box of chocolates! I'm positive whom ever wins this will feel the same way!

And finally, not that it's all that important..but I've been working on a new website and blog design...more so the website...I hope to have it finished over the next month. Please bare with me during these changes...I am probably the most technically challenged person alive and I'm trying to do it myself ;) I may cave though...some of this tech babble is SO hard for me to wrap my mind around! UGH!

We will have a whirl-wind of Christmas celebrations over the next few days. As excited as I am about seeing family, enjoying yum-e food, and watching new memories being made, I'm most excited about spending Christmas Day with Mr. Cottage, Son Cottage, Bitty Girl, and Holly-Olly our furry 4 legged child.

Many of you remember visiting us, and sharing in our story of Anne Marie's "A Very Prarie Holiday". I can still feel the tingle on my skin of excitement from that beautiful event! The adrealin rush of moving all of our furniture, treasures, and paint and the customers and flash bulbs that seemed to flash like fireworks. It was an exciting time for me and the shop. What I've always remembered most about Anne Marie and the event was her constant inner peace. Thru all the little hiccups, Anne stood tall and calm. Nothing truly seemed to rattle her nor her lovely family~

I often say, "Tis' the season.." followed by for chaos, excitement, or stress. No, I'm not a downer, just a shop owner. I see every disappointed customer, child, and frustrated mom and my heart aches. I know I can't fix, find, or have everyone's every want. But even knowing that doesn't mean I don't feel the disappointment also. This is supposed to be "The most wonderful time of the year!"...but we often don't slow down and embrace the amazing gift we could ever get.

My mind quickly is reset from that thinking when I read Anne's blog and her new e-book. Her simple yet powerful message of simple holiday traditions brings a calm peace to me. When I flip thru the pages and the beautiful photography greets me, it warms my heart! Her recipes are mouth watering and her projects are family inviting.

Top 10 Must Have Tools

This is my Top 10 Must Have tools that I work with nearly every time I head to the workshop. Yes, some of these are somewhat unique and expensive..but remember, I'm WAY TOO ~~CHEAP~~ FRUGAL to buy a tool just because it's cool. It must serve it's purpose, and in many cases have more than one purpose. And just to enforce how ~~cheap~~ frugal I truly am, some of these are SO inexpensive, you'll probably question me if I actually use it. Go ahead...ask! :)
So, here's #10!

#10. Kobalt 13-in-1 Multi Bit Ratchet Screwdriver available at Lowes.

This is the best screwdriver BY FAR! The reason is simple, see all those bits...they store in the handle! I simply hate when I'm removing hardware with a flat tip only to find the next drawer has Phillips screws! Off I go running back to the good ol tool box! Per Mr. Cottage, I must return a tool to receive another...I hate this rule even more because inevitably the very next drawer will be back to flat tip screws...and off I go again. (I'm sure you get the picture :)

I love how this handy dandy screwdriver ratchets. With a twist of my wrist, I'm tightening or loosening screws in record time! The 13 bits, which did I mention store in the handle (AWESOME), include 4 flat tips, 4 Phillips, hex & torx bits, and a magnet. No more running back and forth searching for 2 or 3 different screwdrivers!

Have I mentioned it's price? It's under $10! Perfect for a stocking stuffer! I keep one in the kitchen, one in my car, one in my workshop and one in the laundry room. Yes, I am totally addicted to this product. Oh and no, Lowes nor Kobalt are paying me to say any of this! :)

An Annie Sloan Chalk Painted Basket!

My Grandmothers Quilts

I received some rather sad news Friday. My Grandmother who has been very ill for a long time passed. Things have been busy with hosting Thanksgiving and the shop, and yet the world seemed to stand still even if it were for only a moment or two.

This week will be a long and stressful one. Making the trek to St. Louis and laying to rest my Grandmother who is my last living relative from my mothers side of the family. Will bring back many memories good and difficult. Like when my Grandmother gave me my first quilt, taught me to make Thanksgiving dressing, and to sit and enjoy a Sodie on the swing in the back yard. It will also bring memories of my Grandfather and my Mothers passing too. All of which have happened in November around Thanksgiving.

Here are a few pictures of the quilts my Grandmother made for me. Each one for a special reason, Sweet 16, marriage, and the births of my babies. Each one made from scraps left from the clothes she would make us. My Grandmother could recall each fabric, what was made with it and for who. She would spend hours and hours over the summer in the basement working on these quilts. I'm so glad she did.

Every time I would visit, I would wag them all out and spread them on the bed. She would tell me the many stories of scraps she sewed together. I never realized at the time why it was so important to know what fabric went to what sister or cousin for what outfit. Nor why she would tell me not to machine wash them and to air em out on the line. Now I know.. She was teaching me to preserve the stories of our life that was sewn into these quilts. I miss those days.

When I return from my trip, the shop will be bustling with a late shopping night on Friday. It will be good to be home and in the routine of life after such a long week.

Holly Days at the shop

This past weekend was the down town DeKalb Holly Days Christmas walk. We had SO MUCH FUN! The store was bustling with shoppers, holiday music, cookies & goodies! Many of our beloved customers from the very begining of Carter's Cottage were there along with new ones too.

It has been so heartwarming for me to see all the families & smiles, and hear of the fond memories a little treasure from our shop brings to our customers. I hope we have many more opportunities to share these moments!

No surprise, between my new Iphone4S whatever, and hurrying to get everything just so, I forgot batteries for my trusty camera. Here are just a few photos of what the shop looked like after the Fridays shoppers :)

A little something I bought at Kane~

Though I haven't had a chance to share my adventure at Kane, I just had to post about a little something I bought at Kane :) Big surprise I know! Me, buying something! lol~

This is a two piece pie safe that is in incredible condition! You can tell it has been well loved and lovingly taken care of. Though the tin has been replaced with glass, it's still an amazing piece!

With so much Emperor's Silk, Olive, and Antibes Green in the shop right now, I thought it would be a good time to try a different color. Please welcome, Cream! (no, not the music group lol!) I've always described it as a soft butter color, and now as you can see, it truly is a beautiful soft warm butter color!

After painting with cream, I used clear wax first and then dark and love how it gently aged the paint to match the unfinished wood...well, actually I used ASCP dark wax on the untreated oak and let me tell you, it is beautiful!

This isn't the best photo...you see, I've got this new phone that's supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread...well I had my old phone for almost 6 years...so I'm not getting along with this phone so well yet! I will post better pictures soon:)

My NaDa Journey~

The hustle and bustle I have been whirling around in for the past few weeks came to an end on Saturday afternoon. As Mr. Cottage and I traveled down the short road home, I was sadden to come so quickly to the end of my first NaDa journey. I am quietly reflecting on the events of this past weekend all the while dreaming and hoping to be included in the next NaDa Event.

Yes, this even truly is as amazing as everyone says. It's as if it were a dream from which I didn't want to wake. After reading several posts and hearing it described as fairytale, magical, wonderful and amazing...it was all of these things and so much more.

Meeting so many blogging friends from Indy, Wisconsin, Colorado, New Jersey, Iowa, and yes Illinois warmed my heart~ Having my creative soul replenished from amazing artists such as Anne Marie, Jen Rizzo, Jill Harris, Jeanne Oliver, Laura Bright, Sherrie Larkins, Polly, and the Prairie has reminded me of what is most important in this journey...connecting with God and sharing my gift of design & creativity, & passion for touching the lives of others with kindness and understanding.

Someone asked, "Did you sell a lot of paint & furniture? Was all this worth it for you?" My answer was simple and honest. No, I did not sell "a lot of paint & furniture". And yes, it was worth every second of every minute it took to put this on from the very first mention from Anne Marie till I placed the last can of paint back on the shelf at the shop. It was worth every second.

Sometimes we can't measure success in dollars, productivity, profit margins or losses. Sometimes we must measure success in how an event filled our soul....maybe even changed us even if it was just for the journey. It created a memory that filled my every sense. I can close my eyes and head back there no matter where I am or what I'm doing. Yes my friends, it was well worth it~

I'll take it!

Remember a few posts back when I chatted about missing the photo op of the kitchen island, found here. Well, I've had this great little dresser for a few months now, and had big plans for it. A Union Jack...a primitive American Flag...all inspiried from the eagle and star hardware. Due to the shop's grand success, I had to quickly get the dresser painted as I needed to fill a few holes.

After having this beautiful dresser in the window for a week or so, I decided to change it up a bit..actually, I had a few too many things sell, too many new holes again, and it was the perfect size to fill one of those new holes. After I had it placed, I realized I hadn't gotten an after shot. There were a few minutes to spare at the end of a busy day so I grabbed my camera and snapped a few shots.

I understand they aren't great photos, but I wanted to get a few just to tie me over until I could set up the perfect setting and take some nicer photos. Well, my 10 minutes till we closed quickly came to an end and I started closing the shop down. At 5:05, a customer walked in, looked frantically for the "blue dresser from the window!" A look for pure joy and relief came over her face as I pointed her in the direction of the dresser. She pulled the tag and quickly walked up to the desk and proudly announced, "I'll take it!"

Smiling to myself, I gladly wrote her ticket up and loaded it into her car. As she drove off, I realized how much I enjoy hearing "I'll take it! and how happy I was that I got at least 2 after shots of it.

The Harvest Table

Today... the weather has been so beautiful...low 70's with a gentle wind as the sun kisses everything it touches.

Today... is a perfect day for friends and family to come together for dinner in the garden.

This is a beautiful harvest table, library table actually, my friend Pam recently found at a sale.

I couldn't resist taking a moment to set the table in her garden with my china, her crystal, and some of my favorite accent pieces from my home.

Looks like it would fit beautifully in Country Living!

Mr. Cottage found this beautiful work bench at an auction in good ol Southern Illinois~ where the tea is sweet, and bless your heart follows children around at church pick-nicks and gatherings at the lake. Oh how I have missed my friends and family at the lake this summer.

This re-newed work bench turned kitchen island makes me long for days at the lake where friends gather around, laugh, eat, drink, sing, and create new memories~

This is headed to the shop and I'm sure it won't last long. It is the perfect bar height and has locking caster wheels.

One of those days...

Yes, we all have them. And yes, no matter who you are, or what those days entail..they just happen. What I have found is that how those days affect you, family, friends and even innocent strangers is all in your perspective.

I recently had one of those days. It didn't start out that way...both of my wonderful kids got up for school and were ready before it was time..so nice :) My third child, Holly golden was excited as she used to get only one car ride in the mornings and now she gets two. Sent Mr. Cottage a lovely text letting him know the morning went swimmingly well.

I went to the shop and things were great! A busy weekend left the shop a little unkempt, but nothing too bad. Sherrie from A Ruffled Nest was working with me that morning, so life was good. I was working on the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint cabinet and was so excited to watch it transform from a heap of wood into a beautifully detailed cabinet. We chatted about the weekend, upcoming sales & markets, and enjoyed each others company while we worked. As the day came to an end, the cabinet wasn't finished, but was at a point that the paint could go back up. This is where my day became one of those days where it all fell apart...literately.

There were only 6 quarts of paint left to put on the cabinet. I bent down to place 2 quarts on the bottom shelf and I heard a loud crashing sound. Not that I've heard this sound before, but something told me to run! And I did as best as I could...which in the shop, wasn't far nor fast. As I chose my steps carefully, I felt quarts of paint hitting my shoulder, arm, leg and feet and then the cold thick paint drip down my thigh while I slipped in my paint soked flip flops.

When the excitement settled, I turned around to see 46 quarts of paint lying in puddles of Emily, Paris Grey, Old White, Primer Red, Duck Egg Blue, Arles, and Henrietta. Still in shock, I stood there watching my beloved paint stain the carpet. I then realized, I needed to act fast if I were ever to get this mess cleaned up. Grabbing the phone with my paint laden hands, I called Laura from Whimsical Perspective and my good friend Julie. Laura and her Husband brought their shop vac and Julie fled her family to help me. I am so blessed! I have the most awesome friends!

As I started cleaning up the spill so loving referred to as the aftershock felt only at Carter's Cottage (As it was the day after the earth quake on the east coast) I amazingly wasn't too upset. Laura says I was strangely calm. At first, it was because I was starting to feel the bruising my body had taken from the 46 quarts of paint falling onto me. As we worked, I just kept thanking God that this happened after the shop closed. That it was me that was here and not one of my gals from the shop. That I was only bruised not broken. That the paint though expensive, it could be replaced. That my friends who have become family were only a phone call away. That my friend & neighbor Pam went to stay with my kids as Julie and I worked for many hours cleaning the carpet and putting the shop back together for the next day. That no other items in the shop were broken or destroyed from the accident.

You see, sometimes one of those days are the days you realize how blessed you are.

A Nutting Factory Cart

Mr. Cottage and I went to Kane County Flee Market a few weeks ago and found several great finds. One of which I am truly saddened over as I never even got a photo of it before it sold.

It was such a surprise when I rolled this kitchen cart into the shop, unfinished, grabbed some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Graphite, and just set the can down when one of our best customers walked in and said "I'll take it!" Surprised, no shocked, I looked around to see what exactly she was "Taking!" and found it was the kitchen cart! Not even painted yet! Ugh! It was so nice to have it sold, but the camera never found it's way to the shop before it was picked up.

So I am taking before pictures of our Nutting Factory Cart before it even leaves the garage. Sorry about the messy photos~ I will be sure to post after shots once it is finished. And yet again, another piece I would love to keep at home with me~

The Secretary

Oh where to begin~ I have been working on this secretary for quite a while. With so many Annie Sloan Chalk Paint choices, it's was a difficult decision. Graphite and Old White won, and as you can see. Sometimes I tend to play it safe, as generally safe sells. However, what I have found lately is most of the furniture I have painted every other color other than Graphite and Old White sells..sometimes even before I get it finished. We will have to see how long this lasts...if it makes it to the shop :)

For now, it has found a temporary home in my living room. (Until tomorrow when it is supposed to find a place in the shop) Truly, it's a good thing as I love my piano, and this wall is the only wall in my home that both the secretary and piano can be placed on right now. If I ever finish our office, the piano will move to the office, while this beautiful secretary will have to come back home with me...if it doesn't sell first!

Na-Da Farm Life with Anne-Marie~

Sometimes...well..a lot of the time I have the tendency to ramble. I enjoy writing my thoughts down on paper or on screen. It is my way of decompressing and processing...rambling.

I have a friend, Anne Marie of Na-Da Farm Life, who writes and blogs so beautifully. Her elegance to some may appear too simple, but to me it is timeless and effortless. My reading choices are often edgy and force me to consider events and situations that challenge my beliefs, morals, and characters which I truly LOVE. Anne Marie's writing is reading that relaxes me and I often get lost in her words. When I look up, the weight of what ever was crushing me is often gone and time has flown by. I love reading Anne-Marie's blog on days like today~

Recently Anne-Marie featured my little shop on her blog. I truly hope you visit her and relax a bit while you read her stories. The pictures I am posting today are from Anne-Marie's blog. She makes the most delightful Lemon & Lavender cupcakes. My taste buds are longing for them~

The Hutch is FINALLY DONE! (read to the end hint hint!)

The shop has really been keeping me hopping. Our grand opening was this past weekend, and I thought I had enough pieces to keep the shop full... WRONG!

And here's how the story goes...
Mr. Cottage and I went to a sale and bought a few pieces that didn't need much work so we decided to take them directly to the shop so I could work on them when time permitted After all they really, really didn't need much work.

Well, while we were at the sale, Pam sold 3 huge pieces while we were at the sale...so the new pieces went straight into the "holes". As I picked the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors and plopped the quarts on each piece to be painted, they sold! Yes! Not even painted, they SOLD! So, 3 pieces sold on Sunday, and then another 2-3 pieces sold on Monday & Wednesday! Now, the Grand Opening was only days away...and yes I've been working on 2 particular projects for about a month now...simply because of lack of time I haven't had a chance to get them done...but the shop had some pretty major holes with nothing really ready to fill them! Luckily, the girls in the shop pulled together and brought in extra beautifully finished pieces, while I worked endlessly on finishing at least one of the two projects I had started and got it into the store Friday, just a couple short hours before our customers came in!

Thankfully husbands & friends were running back and forth bringing in pieces to fill in the gaps. It was such an exciting time! At the end of the night on Friday, our "Staging" room, which was occupied by Olympic Chiropractic giving free chair massages during our Ladies Night out, was filled and ready for Saturday shoppers! This was the routine all weekend long! A piece would find a loving new home, and another piece would file out! By Sunday Morning, the "Staging" room was completely EMPTY! Yes, the store has a few holes that need to be addressed, but I have 2 days to get some projects finished and put the shop back together! :)

Oh yes, this post is supposed to be all about the hutch! Oops!

This hutch was a thrift store find YEARS ago! It has housed Stampin' Up! supplies, Irish Crystal, photos, bills, and everything in between. Recently I decided I needed a change. So out with the hutch and into the shop it went.

Funny thing is, I originally painted it black...and loved it. For some reason I thought I would try yellow..but the wheat colored yellow I thought I bought was more like SUNLIGHT! So not what I was going for. Back to black it went! I did like how the inside of the hutch looked bright! I could finally see what was in there...but it was still bright enough to light up my garage so I decided to warm it up a bit with some gel stain...distressed the edges, removed the glass and replaced it with chicken wire..and this is how it ended up. I LOVE it, but not enough for it to make it's way back into my home. I've found another hutch I love more, and right now the shop really needs it!

We kicked off the weekend with a Ladies Night out on Friday with goodie bags, special drawings and sales! Everyone enjoyed sweet treats while they shopped and a friendly atmosphere!

This is COOL!...wait...but it is!

I know, I know...lame lol~ But, this is pretty cool...no really it's well, I don't know what it is..SWELL! It's SWELL! That's what it is! :)

This is an ice chest from the 1930's I believe. If you have more information, I would truly appreciate you sharing it with me! The original brass tag is still intact on the front and graces the name "WARD". Yes, there is a tag on the back too, but I forgot to take a quick pic! I'll have to get back to ya on that one!

I picked this HEAVY, but very ~~cool~~, swell freezer from a tag sale this weekend. The paint may be worn, the insides dusty, and the copper pipes a little corroded, but it is just a piece of history and nostalgia I can't seem to stop ooooohhh-ing and aaaahhh-ing over!

The closures and hinges are in amazing condition! They probably weigh 3 lbs each! Which only adds to the charm of the piece to me. And yes, again with that original tag! Not to sound like my grandparents..but they really don't make things like they used to!

Oh! And when was the last time you cautiously popped your discerning nose in a used freezer/refrigerator and were pleasantly surprised to find...NO SMELL?!! Yep! Not even a note of must...Dust on the other hand...plenty of that! Good ol soap and water took care of that though.

To my surprise, it even has the original shelves! 2 of them! Not quite sure about the top compartment where the ice would sit. But it's still a very swell piece. From what Mr. Cottage and I gathered, the ice block would sit in the top compartment on a rack system. Below the rack is a drain pipe (as seen in the back of the bottom compartment). As the ice would melt, the water would flow down the pipe and out of the ice chest. Simple engineering that still works today. :)

Mr. Cottage doesn't get into the whole "antique" idea very often...but even he is loving this one!

It's temporary home is in the shop so stop by and come take a peak! Over the last few days, I picked up 3 truck loads of new treasures! Several of my finds are making their way into the shop piece by piece for our Grand Opening this weekend! Stop by and say hello! I would love to meet ya!

A Sweet lil' Hoosier

Now this isn't something I painted...but I did use Annie Sloan Dark Soft Wax on it to age it just a little bit more. See those sweet little fruit thingies...those are actually wall paper! Oh yeah...the dreaded wall paper cut outs and pasted on the front syndrome. Even with all the ugliness of the fruit wall paper stuck-ons, I could see the potential in this sweet lil' Hoosier. I love the cracked paint that's at least 4 layers deep. It soaked up all the dark wax and accentuated the character. As for those lovely fruit wall paper stuck-ons, I sanded them to give them an aged look to match the crackled paint and dark waxed them too. Looks so nice...I'm not a primitive kinda gal...but I think I would put this in my studio!

Oh, and I just love the glass! It's all wavy and seeded. Even the flour sifter has old glass! Yeah, it's missing a few parts, but the character is priceless! It still has the original spice and recipe wooden shelves along with the barrel bread drawer. Love it! It's kinda hard leaving this one at the shop every night...it really needs to find a new home! lol and not mine! :)

Yes, my Friends! That's right! This is my big news reveal! I am one of the newest stockists for the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

Friday was such a whirl wind...the paint arrived...and I had a fellow blogger there with camera in hand to photo-document it! I don't think she was quite ready for all the hustle and bustle that descended upon her...me sweating buckets, cases and cases, and cases of paint, wax and books...customers shopping, asking questions...oh you name it, it happened! It was so exciting!

Oh and all the colors!!! I can't wait to pop open a can of each color! Everyone knows I have enough furniture to paint 3 pieces in each color...but which pieces in what color? lol~ And to think there will be more colors coming soon! Oh MY!

A few of my favorite things.....this week!

Hello old friend! I knew my latest adventure would take me away from you, but I didn't realize how long I would be gone~ Things are going well and I'm excited to say we have sold at least one thing everyday...actually more, but I don't want to toot my own horn:)

The shop seems to change daily! Some days it's like Christmas morning with new treasures all around while other days it's like settling into your comfy ol chair...oh the memories some of the things from the shop bring flooding back, like a welcome summer breeze!

Since I haven't had time to post much, I thought I would share a few of my favorite things that are in the shop right now!

First up is this awesome little toy kitchen set! I just love, LOVE, LOVE it! And the fridg has actual food and even an egg tray! So cool! I'm thinking it dates to around the 1950's. The fridg is a little newer, but so cute too!

I know what you're thinking...a beer box? YES! But not just any beer box! An Anheuser Bush Centennial box from 1976! See, I grew up in southern Illinois, where everyone is a Cards fan, the tea is sweet & accents are sweeter. Summer starts in April, front porches are wide, & words are long. Y'all is a proper noun and Jesus comes first. Macaroni & cheese is a vegetable, & pecan pie is a staple. Chicken is fried, biscuits come with gravy, everything is darlin, and someone is always getting their heart blessed, and the beer is Bud.

Ah...memory lane is such a nice place to visit!

Next up are the spice tins...yes you remember those! When they were empty, grandma would clean them out and you could play with them like building blocks. Then your brother would stomp on them and make ya cry...not such a great memory there...lol~

I love this. I love this. I love this. I LOVE THIS! I don't know what it is about architectural & industrial elements, but I am so drawn to them. It's almost magnetic lol~ I think this is going to find a new home in my living room...unless someone beats me to it! PLEASE! SOMEONE BEAT ME TO IT! I'M GOING BROKE WITH ALL THESE GREAT TREASURES! LOL~

Now for the unexpected...FUDGE! A close family friend, Steve, makes Kahlua Fudge! It's like a little bite of serendipity every time we have samples! Steve E's Fudge comes in several different flavors like chipolte, Pink Salted, Toasted Pecan, and several others! If you are a fudge lover, you've gottta try this!

And one final favorite thing...that just entered the shop! This is from Laura over at Whimsical Perspective.
I love how she has taken an old favorite and made it her own! The flowers are made from millions (not really, but in my world...MILLIONS!) of fabric circles. She does a few tricks to them and then creates these super cute flowers. Laura also makes hair clips & pins with these cuties available now! Sexy in Paris!

Could this title get any corny-ier? Probably not, but I must say this dresser is by far the most sexy piece of furniture I've done yet!I just LOVE Paris Gray! These curves are accentuated by the contrasting white detailing. It's sitting in the front window of the shop! We open tomorrow and it's coming together so quickly! I promise to post pictures of the opening...though we have a "Grand Opening" scheduled in a few weeks. Enjoy~

Carter's Cottage the Store

I guess when I finally get to sit at my laptop WITH my camera, great things happen! :) Things have been a whirl-wind of activity around here with just 3 days till we open! Oh MY! 3 DAYS!? Wow! Alright.. here are a few preview pics of the shop. Fair warning...these are un-edited and the girls booths are in the early stages of set up. I'm sure you will get a great idea of what they have though! Some really cute things!

Ok, this little piece is getting SO much attention from the dealers, I'm sure it won't last long once we open! Sherri is a prim gal with such great creativity & craft-woman's ship! :)

Jennifer's collection is a great mix of prim, antique, garden art or as she calls it yard art and retro! I just LOVE the little candelabra on her buffet!

This sweet pink and white booth is Candy's Corner. Candy's specialty is vintage hats, gloves, & purses. As you can see, I'm still in the process of replacing some light bulbs :)

These last few shots are just random pics as I was walking out last night. I hope you have enjoyed the "preview". I'm sure just since last night the shop has transformed a little more:) Everyone is a buzz with excitement and activity! I know it's been a very long time since I've actually had time to post. It truly amazes me how much time I have put into opening the shop and there is still so much to do. If anyone has a cloning machine, I'd so pay to use it!

In between painting, cleaning, moving, organizing, and prepping I have been working on several pieces to add to my space at the shop. I am so excited about Paris Grey right now! There just isn't enough ASCP to last me these days. Can't wait till I get my shipment in!...I digress. With having such a large shop, I have several new pieces going in...and all of them seem to be a varying stages of not quite being finished...Hum...could it be the ADD or just the excitement of it all?! lol~

To add to all the excitement and work, last week was Kane Co. Flea market and this week it's also town wide garage sales! I have been so blessed to meet some of the nicest people at both sales! And even a couple from my run ins over the last week or so have taken a spot at the shop! I can't wait to snap up some pics of their spaces! The gals that are joining me are so talented and fun! Can't wait to get the doors open as I know their stuff will blow right out the door like these good ol Chicago winds!

Speaking of pictures...like I said, everything seems to be at one stage or another with nothing quite finished. I must admit, my fav piece right now is this beauty! It's from an old antique piano from the early 1900's. I used ASCP Louis Blue and Old White. As much as I ~~want~~ need to sell this, I'm having a hard time convincing myself of that!

Oh How I MISS U!

Oh my blogging family, how I miss you so! Things are moving along quite nicely at the shop! Everything has been painted, swept, and people are starting to move in! I am so excited with the progress, and I must admit, nervous too:) I know I promised pictures, and I will get some soon...this is truly the only one I have. Mr. Cottage was goofing around while I was painting and snapped this. So this is what I look like when I work. I do clean up well, but you'll just have to take my word for it!

Can't wait to share more...but will have to wait a bit longer. I promise! It'll be worth it!

Found a few more!

The periwinkle is gone and the nice neutral taupe is finished. I did keep the dark blue...kinda liked it and it was in good shape, so why take the time to cut in all round the ceiling? June 15th is just around the corner! Tick Tock!

a BIG change~

On Friday, May 13th my career turned around, again, in an amazing string of events. I viewed a building in down town DeKalb Illinois that was on the market to rent. I knew of the opportunity, and even took a peak in side before, but never imagined in a million years I would ever be able to open my own shop. Friday the 13th my eyes were opened to that very possibility.

That same day, Annie Sloan, creator of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, published a link on her social media networks to my review on this blog of her chalk paint. I knew my career would benefit from this, but I never imagined how awesome it would become.

Since that day, I have been working on getting that shop open. It's been quite a crash course in business, tax information, LLC or INC or Sole prop., and let's not forget insurance! I am counting my blessings from all the knowledge I never thought I would use from working at the bank...it has proven priceless more than a time or two!

This opportunity has also shown me how every endeavor in life is a foundation for what is to come. Years ago I used to paint murals & faux finishes and was known in the small town I lived in at the time as the painting girl. Its hard to believe now I would be looking into carrying a line of paint and teaching others how to use it, and opening my own shop. I am blessed beyond measure :)

I know this doesn't look like much, but it will give you an idea of what Carter's Cottage the Shop looks like. Today I spent 3 hours vacuuming, 3 hours painting, and 1 hour cleaning. Oh, and these are the before pictures. I'm sure I will be posting so many pictures of this place everyone will be so tired of hearing about it!

We are set to open on June 15th with a grand opening June 18th. When I'm not working on the shop, I am home working on projects. I'm truly sorry I haven't been able to post much lately, but I'm sure that will change once the shop is ready for business. I have many projects that I can't wait to share with you...it's just going to take a little time to get them posted.

This is a picture of the far off corner where I was standing in the previous picture. These are little dressing rooms which are a perfect size for someone with glass ware or smalls to sell!

I know what you're thinking...what is this?! This is going to be my sales counter! Duh! lol~ And man is she R-O-U-G-H! She has such great character though! It'll be worth all the work that's going to go into her to get her ready! Just having a hard time convincing Mr. Cottage about that lol~

These are the sliding doors I took off to hang behind the sales counter. I think they will be awesome in Duck Egg Blue! Wha-d-ya think? Oh, and that black speckle stuff, yeah that's mold. A friend salvaged her from a barn in Wisconsin. She kinda smelled like the cows so I had to give her a good scrub down!

I know this has been a long post. Thanks for sticking with it to the end. And even though I don't have anything really finished yet, I'm still going to post this on some of my favorite links. It will have to be a first in a series...that has to be done SOON!

Garage SALE!

I'm sorry I've been MIA for the past few days. Things have been pretty crazy around here for many reasons, namely because of the big annual garage sale. I thought I'd share a few pics of things that are up for grabs.

This was my daughters bed. Very cute, but she's not a day bed kinda gal. So, it's up for grabs!

Here is a really cool Czech table. The top has decals of roses. I just love this table...but don't really need it.

Alright, I got this little chair a while back and thought I'd re-new it. It's in amazing condition! Finding chairs without damaged rattan is rare! Will be an awesome find for some lucky person!

This is a sad set. I took the hardware off because there were a few pulls missing and put them on a different set that needed less pulls. I was going to re-new them...but I've come across a few other great finds that will require less work! So, I hate to see them go! But...time to make room for Flo!

This is a unique set of odds. Very old chair in need of a new rattan seat...yep damaged rattan lol~ Foot stool with loose legs. And a vanity bench that just didn't seam to match the vanity so it has to go!

And finally, oh, not that this is my last piece for the garage sale...I have so much stuff I hope I sell most of it, but would be happy if I sold a quarter of it! lol~ Back to this little set. This is a vintage tele table that's in very good condition. Would look great painted a bright orange! Or whatever color you like!

So off to bed I go! I hope I can sleep tonight! Big sale tomorrow!

Little Sheet Music Table

In all the excitement of yesterday, I totally forgot to post about this sweet little table I finished! The sheet music tables I have made have really been a great success! They leave the store almost as quickly as I get them in! I guess there's just something about vintage yellowed sheet music atop a cute little side table that makes every gal need one!

I found the vintage sheet music at one of my regular hot spots. The song is "I Love" and was written by a local musician for one of the high schools plays. Each of the pages has the characters name at the top written in pencil along with notes about timing and pitch. Oh the memories it brought back of my high schools plays and concerts. lol~ No, I am NOT a singer. Many of my friends were though and I remember them making similar notes on their sheet music. I still plunk around on the piano, but that's more for my kids amusement (smile:).

Today is a HUGE garage sale day around here...and of course it's raining! How can it go from sunny & 86* to rainy & 49* in less than 24 hours? Guess that's Northern Illinois for you! Speaking of garage sales....I'm going to have on next weekend! Yep! Not sure what I'll throw in, but I'm sure someone will love my goodies!

Thoughts on Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint

With the blog world a buzz with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint (ASCP), after much thought I ordered my first quarts. With so many wonderful trusted bloggers posting about it, many of you have also ordered. However, some of you are still contemplating your first order. Understanding how cautious I was about ordering, I thought I would share my every thought on this infamous paint.

First, I don't know if you caught it or not, but in the first few sentences I stated "my first order". Yes, I the ever cautious designer/painter/skeptic will be ordering several quarts very soon! Having said that, I feel there is much to know about this paint before spending the $34.95 a quart. Please let me elaborate.

The piece I painted first had a mirror finish and was in impeccable shape. (It was almost a sin to paint it!) Due to the fact it was in such good shape provided a perfect surface to test the stickibility of ASCP. It stuck! AND when I used a foam roller, the roller did NOT slide! It rolled the paint out perfectly. I was very impressed~

Foam roller...Yes, the directions, along with many of you, have talked about using a brush. I have small hands and have a hard time brushing an entire piece even if it is just a small table. Using a brush for the detailed areas and corners worked perfectly. I then followed with the foam roller on the flat surfaces. The finish was a little mottled...which made me wonder if the paint was really going to hold up the my high expectations and the rave reviews from so many trusted bloggers! After the second coat, yes 2 coats, the finish evened out and covered nicely.

A few bloggers have made the comment that it dries fast and the workability window is narrow. I did not find that to be true. Please keep in mind, I am in northern Illinois where it was cool and rainy today. Humidity is ALWAYS a factor in any painting project. Getting back to workability...personally I cut in only the area I can paint within a minute or two with my roller. I find this prevents shadowing and with good ol latex paint, pull off. (paint is pulled off the wall/furniture by the roller)

With two coats, I did feel the need to sand the finish smooth. There's just something about the feel of ultra smooth paint! Sanding is not required if you are going for a more uneven look...Now please understand. When I say "uneven" I don't mean goopy, gloppy, drippy runs nor do I mean shadowing. The consistency of this paint is perfect to me! What I mean is when using a roller, you will have the roller finish just as you would when painting a wall with flat paint. There will be subtle texture. If an ultra smooth or even a smoother finish is desired, then you will need to sand. The up side to sanding is it sands beautifully and effortlessly! I used 150/200 grit to even out the surfaces and 100 for the distressing. When sanded, the paint turns into a super fine powder. I used a commercial grade shop dust collector (because they are sooo quiet! Really!) while sanding to keep the powder from spreading to other areas of my studio. It worked perfectly and kept the air nice and clean. (any dust/vacuum/shop vac would work just more noise)

Speaking of air, I would suggest wearing a dust mask. Though the dust is super fine, it's probably best not to breath it!

Once I achieved the smooth finish I was looking for, I used the wax to seal the paint and give it a nice shine. I used Minwax clear and applied it with a soft natural brush. After buffing it with a soft cloth, painting the original hardware (with spray paint) reattaching them, and attaching the stained top, the piece was complete.

I completely finished this table in one day! ONE DAY! And that was including sanding, staining, waxing the top. If I had not been so cautious, I could have painted at least 2 additional pieces and had them nearly ready to finish (wax and re attach hardware) in one day. That would make 3 pieces of furniture ready to sell in ONE DAY!

Using other primer and paint, the quickest I could have finished this one piece would have been 2 days...pushing it, 3 more realistically. After I put the night stand/dresser away, I counted how many other pieces I could have had done if I had this paint sooner! Can't beat myself up over my cautious nature!

For myself, it all comes down to dollars & sense. Kelli over at Re-Store Interiors said that you can get 3 pieces of furniture per quart. That averages to about $12.50 per piece of furniture. If you are buying smart, then time saved and $$ spent on the paint should still give you a nice return on your piece. (I do not know if Kelli applies 2 coats or one)

As with most everyone one living in the world today, I am more than just a blogger.. I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, business owner, chef, taxi, accountant, calendar, maid, laundress, and the list goes on. Some of these things I love being..while others...well let's just say the laundry is one of the last things one my to-do list and it never seems to-done lol~ Regardless, my time is worth something, even when it's not spent working on something I will make a profit on. So, I saved 3 days of work. That, is priceless. Especially considering summer vacation is nearing, I'm going to be opening another shop, and my kids are officially teenagers!

In closing, this review is mine...and was not influenced by freebies (if I could only get so lucky!:). I felt like there was more to this paint then what many were saying, and for me there was. Like I've said before, I'm very cautious, and am probably the most frugal person alive! Spending $34.95 + shipping on a quart of paint is unheard of for myself...my husband said I must of been sleep shopping lol! Having said all that, this paint is well worth the investment and I am a believer!

I am beyond pleased with this piece, and impressed with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint. Next on my list to order is Arles, Paris Grey, Louis Blue, Graphite...well probably at least one of each color...two of some basic staples like Old White! lol~

This piece is going directly to the shop where I'm sure it won't last long!

Blogger Woes

Hello My Blogging Friends,

I am sorry to say, Blogger is having some sort of technical difficulty. Many of the blogs I personally follow are not showing on my dashboard! This is a tragedy as I can't visit them and see all the creativity or treasures you are posting! I'm positive Blogger is working very hard to resolve the problem and are as sad as I am that their service isn't living up to it's potential as it normally does!

Yes, there are ways to skirt around the dashboard to find all the latest posts from my favorite blogs...that requires me to visit every single blog I follow, and not everyone is addicted to blogging as I am and posts several times a week! Many of the blogs I have recently visited are on a mini vacation...with the last two weeks of holidays, I totally understand! So it has become a little time consuming.

So, I have a little favor to ask of you! If you have an awesome post, or recently read an awesome post, leave me a link in my comments box! SO EXCITED! Indroducing "The Girls"!

Ok, I just can't contain my excitement about my latest thrift find! Oh this is SO GOOD! It's like so good I can't even type fast enough! It's like better than the chocolate milkshakes I would crave when I was pregnant! Or the first time I had tiramisu, or ran 5 miles, or when I got Flo my 95' Mustang GT 5.0L, 5 speed convertible! Yes, it's THAT GOOD!

I went to one of my all time fav thrift stores and found this!
Introducing The GIRLS!

Are these not the sweetest thing?!! Ready for the best part? The cushions are springs with DOWN FILL! YES DOWN! Soft, fluffy, cotton candy like DOWN! It's like sitting on a cloud! They are in amazing shape with no funky smells or stains. It's like they were sitting in a parlor that was never used! Lucky Me!

Oh! Just look at those LEGS! So curvy! Such detail! Makes my heart go pitter-patter! No vacuum scuffs or stray dust bunnies clinging too these beauties! It's not every day you come across a find as good as this!

Yes, they are pink and blue which doesn't actually fit into my "neutral" world. But for now, they are just fine. After finding these, I did order the zipper foot for my Pfaff and it should be here soon. Reupholstering these will be a task as I haven't tackled anything quite like these before. However, shopping for upholstery for The Girls is going to be so much fun it will make the task well worth it!

Speaking of upholstery, do I stick to my comfortable bubble and go with a beautiful linen? How about a nice silk? Maybe not...silk just scares me! Water stains, finger prints, not to mention if I make a mistake...Let me rephrase that...When I make a mistake, the needle holes will show. lol~ How about a nice mocha velvet? Or, hot pink! My mind is racing with possibilities!

Now it's time to get back to reality! The shop is doing well, and I've got to get back to my studio to replenish for the weekend!

The story of a girl who could keep a secret

Hello My Friends!

Have you ever sat down to post on something, but didn't have a great story to share about it? No story about the thrill of the hunt, nor about the transformation. The piece just simply happened. Yes, as with nearly all pieces for me, it was difficult in deciding exactly what to do, but nothing note worthy. All the original hardware was there. Though a little on the rusty side, it wasn't anything a good scrubbing, primer & paint couldn't fix. It also had some veneer damage, like nearly everything I pick up, but it I worked on it and patched it up seamlessly. It weighs a TON and had to be moved numerous times due to weather and priming. I am so blessed to have a strapping young Son Cottage and Mr. Cottage to help! But other than that...nada!

She's a beautiful SOLID vanity, that came together fairly easy, and now sits in my shop. So I guess you could say the story of this beautiful little vanity, is there is no story! Or at least a story that I know of. I'm sure in the 80+ years of life she has lived, she could fill a series of novels! Oh the stories she could share!

Perhaps one of her stories is about how her corner on the center apron was broken off. A previous owner cherished it enough to piece it back together with a square head nail. In one of her travels from owner to owner, the piece had fallen off again. Each owner seemed to understand the importance of the broken piece, and lovingly placed it in the center drawer. For years it waited patiently to be reunited with the apron. The previous owners must have been discouraged with the daunting task of fixing the veneer. I understand this, but embrace the challenge. Surprisingly, it stayed in that center drawer until I got her.

When I brought her to my studio, I gingerly removed the nail and pieced her back together. I spent several hours carving and layering different veneers to replace the damaged veneer. Once it was near perfect, I filled and sanded the seams and nail holes. I then restored her beauty with a fresh coat of paint and gave her a massage of wax to brighten up her curves. She is stunning! Most importantly, her life will continue for many more years as she is an heirloom with timeless beauty and grace. She will hold the secret stories of her past and create new stories in her new home.

So, there is a story after all. It's the story of a girl who could keep a secret.

Your Opinion Please CONTINUED...

Hello Friends!
First let me say Thank You! to everyone for your comments, suggestions, and opinions! I read them carefully, and then re-read them a few more times! Several of you asked me questions in return that I had not contemplated..which was exactly what I was hopping for~ Awesome & Thank You! It prodded me into thinking outside of the ol box...which is something I need help with! You see, I live in something more like a constantly morphing bubble lol~

Let me take a quick moment to answer a couple of those questions you asked me!
1. Is this for you, or to sell in a shop?
Not for me, to put in my new shop.

2. Is the condition as bad as you think it is? Or is it minor, limited to the top of the one piece?
I really wanted to paint this, but once I saw the details, I had to completely rethink painting it. The veneer on top of the desk is very damaged, and would be impossible for me to restore to original. On the curved sides of the desk, the veneer is loose, but could be re-glued. I could fix the damaged veneer on top, and paint the top, legs, and chair as many of you suggested. :)

3. Are the flowers painted on or decals?
Upon further inspection, the desk flowers are painted. The side table has decals with painted details on the top.

4. So what are you going to do with these beauties?
I'm going to repair the top of the desk and loose veneer on the sides. Paint the top, legs, and chair a creamy yellow color, close to the color that is already on it. And leave the rest alone! :)
If it doesn't sell after a while, I will probably paint the entire thing.

Now, to pick a color~ lol! I hope I can make a decision on that one! I first thought I would paint it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in cream with an antique finish. What a surprise on that one lol~ Then after chatting with Annie, she suggested Old Orcher with a little Arles mixed in. She thought this would be the closest color match to what is already on the set...which I love!

Though I have been on the fence, so to speak, about the infamous Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, I have been swayed and am now a believer! No, I haven't used it yet. (gasp..what?) I recently put my first order in, unfortunately not of the two colors I'm going to be painting this set with (guess I am ensuring additional orders to soon follow lol~).

What has swayed me was Annie's customer service. To take time to email me directly, answer specific questions about color, longevity, and quality, shows Annie is committed to her company and more importantly, her customers. No, it wasn't a girlfriend chat over coffee...it was a nitty gritty answer a wavering customers answers to prove your product. She convinced me~ She is good!

As many of you may not know, I am an ultra conservative when it comes to color. Lol~ Look at my blog of what I've painted! Black & white! lol~ Sorry, I digress...

After being in design, and dealing with customers not capable of making a decision on white, or winter white for their walls (good grief!)...I understand the need to be "neutral" with how I approach the painted furniture I sell in the shoppes. White & black are "safe" colors, unlike other muted colors and forget brightly painted things! No they aren't as much fun, but if it's a large piece, I stay neutral. I know! I know! I stay neutral any way! :) Believe it or not...Color does make me happy! AND...one persons beloved red is anther's hated orange.

Perhaps this set will open my eyes to colorful painted furniture. We will see!

Ring Ring! Ring Ring!

One of my favorite childhood activities was chatting on the phone to my best friends. My poor father didn't stand a chance to place a call with 4 girls and my mother in the house! I can still see the old white rotary Bell telephone hanging on the dining room wall. The cord was so stretched it could reach the edge of the living room, for when I would watch Facts of Life while chatting to my BFF Tina about Blair's hair. It would also reach the kitchen sink when I would chat to another BFF Cassie while I would wash the dishes. And even to the most private place I had ever known as a child, the linen closet next to the bathroom. Now as you could imagine, it wasn't always the most pleasant place to carry on a conversation with the swish of the toilet flushing (there were 7 of us in that ol house with 1 toilet!), but when the phone rang and it was my first love, Ricky, it was perfect! Oh to be young and only to worry about Blair's hair and getting my call from Ricky! lol~

When I happened across this little telephone table & chair, all those memories of the late night phone calls to my best friends and boy friends came flooding back and brought a smile to my face! I knew I just had to have this cute telephone table! It also dawned on me, why in the world didn't we have one of these! Stuffing myself under the bottom shelf in the linen closet with all the lost towels and dish rags suddenly didn't seem as romantic as I remember lol~

A few weeks after bringing home the table, I realized I was longing for a rotary phone. The hunt began, and ended pretty quickly as Mr. Cottage snagged one up in Wisconsin the very exact same day I snagged one online! We now have a matching black set ;) I just love the way it feels when I dial my old number! It truly surprised me when I could remember Tina & Cassie's numbers too!

One of the greatest pleasures I get from this new adventure is finding a great treasure that sparks a memory from long ago that I can share with my kids. With baseball, track, volley ball, and piano going on at the present, I know they are much too busy to listen. I'm hoping that someday, they will read this and have a little giggle over their mom chatting on a dinosaur of a phone to some strange boy named Ricky in Grandpa's linen closet.

I'm moved in!

It was a beautiful day for a move! The sun was shining, birds singing, and my daffodils finally bloomed! It was a perfect day to move!

We filled 2 trucks and my mini van with great treasures for out new shop at Bee-Attitudes! Once we arrived, the space was cleaned out, and the gals a Bee-Attitudes were so great and helpful! It was like a bunch of school aged girls giggling over the latest gossip of Susie and Johnny!

Luckily, Mr. Cottage was there to help with the big stuff, and WOW was some of that big stuff heavy! It was amazing how much we were able to put in our new little shop! The furniture kept coming, and so did the boxes! Packaged crystal, vintage lighting, shabby furniture, and a retro black rotary phone were strewn from one room to another while Pam and I moved into our new space. With each piece unwrapped, our excitement grew! I'm not sure the gals at Bee-Attitudes had ever seen such a whirl wind move in so quickly!

At one point, Pat said "You've got a lot of stuff!". Mr. Cottage, Pam and I just smiled and looked at one another, as this isn't even a fraction of what we I have in storage! We'll just say as they do in extreme couponing, "I've gota stock pile!"

Truly, I am so proud of our little accomplishment and it looks absolutely perfect! It just couldn't have been a better day! Perfect weather, lot's of help, a beautiful location with the perfect atmosphere~ ah...just what I needed! :)

Today is another great and busy day! Have 2 deliveries to make and it's Kane County Flee market weekend! I think I'll bring my camera to the Kane and take some pictures to share with you. If you've never been, you should at least go once!

As promised, I have some pictures. I thought I was going to have so many, but time was running out and so were my batteries! Need to remember to add extras in my bag on days like that!

Today Is THE Day! Moving into Bee-Attitudes in Batavia!

I have been working very hard non stop over the past week to finish projects for the new shop and Today Is THE day! I'm moving into Bee-Attitudes in Batavia!

I promise to post everything once I'm settled in. Lot's of new things finished, so there will lots of pictures to share with you!

Just a Quick Update :)

Things are getting pretty crazy here with the move-in date just days away...UGH hate saying that as it only reminds me of everything I have to do! :) Anyway...After sanding, priming, sanding, 2nd coat of primer, sanding, 1st coat of paint, and sanding yet again for the final top coat of paint, and THEN wax!!! I have placed my 1st order for this infamous Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

I totally get that it saves time, which equals higher profit margin...however how does that translate in longevity of the paint? Does skipping the initial sanding really mean time saved=money earned? Or after 6 or 9 months or a year later, the piece needs a new coat of paint???

In addition, there is the $34.95 per QUART cost. Yes, I'm not spending additional money on a high quality primer ($39.99 gal), and about $30 gal on paint...but if you break it down, it's still cheaper than Annie Sloan Chalk paint. So, it all comes down to time. How much time am I spending with the preping process and what is it worth to me? Let me tell you, I am spending HOURS & HOURS in prep! Could be worth it...as many of you have advised me :)

I'm just skeptical, and cautious. Probably more cautious than skeptical. I do not want to have to SAND, PRIME, SAND, PAINT, ECT on a "finished" piece because of poor paint adhesion and performance. I do want to give my customers a superior product. Is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint the answer? I will see!

My order of Old Ocher, Old White, and Duck Egg Blue will be in next week. I will definitely keep ya'll posted on my thoughts. Until then, I'm back to SANDING, PRIMING, SANDING, PRIMING, SANDING, PAINTING, SSSSSSSSAAAANNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDDIIIIIIINGGGGG!!!!

Mirror, Mirror, On the Lawn

This is one of the pieces I have been working on for the new shop. Yes, I'm keeping the name of the "New Shop" under wraps until I'm in for a week. Not that the last shop was bad, it was just very tough to have the impression of longevity only to find it lasted a short 7 days. When a door closes, a window opens, and that's just what happened my friends!

Which brings me to a question I must ask, Mirror Mirror, On the Lawn, How will my new shop do? Ok, that was totally corny and doesn't even rhyme, lol! :)

This pretty mirror was a thrift store find. I fell in love with the scrolling details and knew they would paint up BEAUTIFULLY! If my entry wasn't so small, I would not let this baby go! At times like these, I am so grateful I can see potential in thrift store treasures!

I scooped it up, and brought it home knowing it would be perfect for the shop! In my New Shop space, I have the entrance and foyer of an old historic Victorian mansion. Some of you may already know where the new shop is simply by that description. And you may just be 100% correct! BUT, until I am there for a whole week...mums the word. No, I'm not superstitious, just cautious. I digress...

As with most Victorian homes, the entrance is a little on the dim side. With the help of mirrors and vintage lamps, I am hopping the space will look as if it were sunny every day! And here in Northern Illinois, we could use every ounce of sunshine we get these days!

Alrighty then! I've got so much to do to get ready for the New Shop! Off to my studio to continue work!

Lovely 1980's Oak trim

Today I am complaining. Fair warning! Down right, ungrateful, selfish, pitty party for one, COMPLAINING!

I hate oak trim. Expecially when it's tiny builder cheap 1980's golden oak trim. We all know what it looks like...brown, boring, tiny in size, but creates a MONSTROUS impact on wall color choice, ugly trim. I HATE IT and it's EVERYWHERE in my house!

The first level of our home boasts tall ceilings, enormous floor to ceiling fireplace, 17x22 family room, open floor plan, so many windows there is no wall space...the dream space, with the one exception of the trim. Its tiny! TINY for this space...with 9 1/2' ceilings why would anyone in their right mind put 21/4" builder basic OAK trim?!! Luckily they didn't add any crown! But it is driving me INSANE! The windows are some off breed of wood, stained to look oak, but look more orange than wood of any kind. All the doors are...ready for this...PINE! And the blinds are...PLASTIC WOOD!. Could this possibly get any worse?! Yes, it could!

In the master bedroom, the ceiling is vaulted to a stunning 12'...and there is a small, but sill obnoxious built in book case...in...OAK! And of course pared with the lovely orange windows, plastic wood blinds, pine doors, and tiny trim.
Lovely....GAG!

So we obviously didn't buy this house because of the trim (my #2 requirement...white trim)...actually we almost didn't buy this house because of the trim. We did buy this home though because of the floor plan, location to schools and transportation, and it met my #1 requirement. Sidewalks, street lights, and neighbors. Our last home did not have sidewalks, and living on a busy street walking to school was always an issue. Walking home after dark was an even bigger issue. Hence the street light requirement. And neighbors because I'm a social gal! Oh, and please understand, this is a lovely home with many aspects that I adore. It's just that some of the major structural and not so easy to change details made by the previous owner/builder I wouldn't have chosen...ever.

So why not just paint it, or what I would prefer, RIP IT OUT!? Because Mr. Cottage is in the school of "All wood is good." I'm in the Christopher Lowell school of "Just because it's wood, doesn't mean it's good." The main reason we don't paint or replace it is, this isn't our forever home, so I will have to just deal with the disgusting ugly 1980's trim.

Today with the monsoon, fierce lightening, and down right cold northern winds, I am dreaming of my forever home which boasts 4"+ trim, crown molding, wainscoting, transom windows with white sashes, white cottage doors with oil rubbed bronze hardware, and the beautiful contrast of the white 1/4 round trim against the hand scraped dark wood floors. AAAAAAaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh....... FLASH OF LIGHTENING! Ok! Ok! Back to reality! Grocery shopping, laundry, kids, dog, dinner, dishes...yep, and 1980's ugly wood trim.

Hello my Friends!

Though I was out of the re-purposing/refinishing loop for a bit, I was still trying to find time to buy great treasures. I have found if you look hard enough, and lady luck just happens to be sitting close by, you will find exactly what you are looking for! That is just exactly what happened to me Friday!

Being somewhat confined to my desk, I decided to take a break from studying (I'm going to grad school and had a HUGE test. Hence my disappearance). I pulled up my old friend Craig..you know Craig right? He's got this amazing list of stuff for sale. He calls it Craigslist! lol~ (Need humor..test was 5 hours long! On a Saturday!) Ok..ok...

Here is my latest and greatest treasure! I purchased this from the sweetest Polish Babcia! She had purchased it for her grand daughter from friends who immigrated from Poland and France. I'm guessing it was the wife's as she was from France and it looks very French to me.

It is in amazing condition structurally. As you can see the desk top does have an issue or two. With it's age, there are bumps, scrapes, and rub marks on all three pieces. The flower paintings/decals? are good, but not great. Again the desk shows the most worn finish with the flowers completely missing from the top and the veneer chipped and missing. The chair, though very petite, is very sturdy as well as the side table. I simply am in LOVE with this set! I just don't know what to do with it though! Leave it alone? Restore it to nearly new with new veneer? Fix and paint? I just don't know!

The Babcia was so sweet, I wasn't even going to bargain a better price...but she just kept offering less. I think I was in shock with beauty and condition the set, not to mention her garage full of treasures she was selling! At first I didn't realize she was going further down in price because I wasn't responding. I finally came to and yelled, I think, "That's fine! I'll take it!". I know, you should never interrupt when the seller is offering a better price, but I started to feel like I was taking advantage of this sweet Babcia! And I never even opened my mouth to offer less! lol~ Oh the guilt! Which is another reason I just don't know what to do with it! lol~

Still in shock, I don't even know how I realized her other treasures! Oh the silver & antiques! And nearly everything was in amazing condition, with a detailed history of the piece, and from another country. It was like a little slice of heaven! If only I had the money to buy everything, I would have. I did walk away with a sweet little antique mirror and newish picture frame. But I wouldn't let her take less than what was marked!

Here's where you come in, my Friend! Your opinion Please! Tell me what you would do with this? Paint, fix, or what? Or, what you WOULDN'T do with this! I'm so excited to hear from you!

Victorian Egyptian Revival Silver....What??

Alright, yes you did read that correctly. I know, it took me a while to wrap my mind around this one too. After much thought and referring back to my design school books, hours of research on the net, and great discussion with my friend Pam..it all makes sense!

And so the story goes,

Pam and I went to an estate sale last Friday and I stumbled across this silver set. I kinda scratched my head, and carried it around with me while I shopped only to finally put it back. As soon as we left, REGRET set in! But I was on a tight time line! I was meeting a customer of mine and had just enough time to get there. So, no time to go back. And with the events of the day, the shop I was in closing, moving my things, finding a new shop, and oh yeah, my super sweet customer! Well you get the picture. The regret I felt over not buying the set soon left and was filled with the daunting task ahead of me that day.

Bright and early the next day, I texted Pam to see if she wanted to go back. She immediately said YES! and we hopped in my van and took off! As soon as we got to the sale, we went our separate ways, Pam to the basement for a Christmas village she had her eye on, and me towards the mantle where a silver vase was yesterday..but gone once I got there. So I quickly headed towards the basement. The set was still there! I was shocked, but then again was I really?

This has got to be the strangest set I have ever seen! The Egyptian heads with the big scroll-y Art Nouveau flowers, paired with the band of Victorian highly detailed forest scene? What exactly is this??? Finally I came to the decision to buy it, but not for the price marked. After all, the covered sugar was missing the lid. I bargained with the sales lady for a mere $25 for the set. Yep, you read that right. I don't usually like to broadcast the price of my finds, especially when it could be considered a sin! But this time is different. Why, you may ask? Because I truly have no idea what it's worth! If you know, I would be forever thankful if you shared with me!

Once I got home, I realized I did have the covered sugar & lid. So what was this extra piece? After much research I found the weird extra piece was actually a waste decanter for honey comb and tea leaves. Neat! The set as I have it includes a coffee pot, tea pot, covered sugar, and wast decanter. It is missing the creamer, but I think it's fine! I've never seen a "waste decanter"! Oh, and this set is strangely large! The coffee pot is almost 14" tall with the covered sugar 91/2"!

There are many pictures due to the detailing of this set. It truly is the strangest thing, don't you think? If you know anything about this, please share! The stamp is the original stamp from the Aurora S.P. Mfg. Co. from Aurora Illinois. (Which is just a hop from where I live!) This stamp dates it to around 1869 to mid 1880's. One of the first sets made by this company.

The Victorian era loved Egyptian mythology which explains the heads. In addition, the large flower pattern and squarely angled handles and spouts explain the early onset of the Art Nouveau. The beautifully detailed silver band of the forest scene of flowers, deer, and trees in a tapestry appearance easily connects to the Victorian era and date stamp. So to me, all of this beautiful detail all makes sense in a strange kinda way.

Something Wonderfully Wonderful~

Hello Friends,
My last post was a little on the blue side. I ended with promising to post something "Wonderfully Wonderful". Yes, I am a gal that still ties meaning to my words! So, here is my "Wonderfully Wonderful" post :)

The weather was so beautiful, and my muscles are still a little achy today. I look out my beautiful bay window into the back yard, and I hear it calling my name. My old friend, Hammock.
My Hammock has found it's permenant home between two perfectly spaced shade trees amidst the soon to be blooming tulips and daffodils. In the summer, the smell of Rosemary, and Mock Orange fill the air while the Day lilies and hosta fill in my shade garden with cherry yellows, whites, and silvery greens. Oh how I have longed for those days during those long cold months of winter.

As I walk across the grass that is finally getting some vibrant color back to it after this long harsh winter, I run my finger along Hammocks edge and smile. I know exactly what I need is right here at the tips of my fingers floating like a feather in the breeze. "I'm so glad you called today." I say.

I kick off my shoes and gently settle in. Instantly I am cradled by my old friend and it brings a smile to my weary face. A soft yellow blanket of sunshine warms me while the wind gently rocks me. I hear the birds singing me their lullaby, and I close my eyes. It doesn't take long for me to drift off to a peaceful sleep while the earth continues on. I am comforted by what surrounds me, the sun, wind, birds, and Hammock. Life is more than Wonderfully Wonderful. It is beautiful and a gift. I hope you have a Wonderfully Wonderful moment today.

A sad & exhausting day. Eclectibles is closing

Dear Carter's Cottage Customers and Blog Friends,

Today has been an sad & exhausting day. I found out late last night that the store we just moved into 7 days ago will be closing April 30th. Though I was only at the shop for 7 days, I did sell a few items. It was a good first sprint at having my own shop and with the sales I had, well worth it.

With living about 45 minutes from the shop, price of gas, and some commitments we have planned, Mr. Cottage and I decided we would move out this week when I met a client near Batavia. We packed up and went home. I know it was a difficult decision, and I am grateful for the few short days there. It has shown me that what I am doing is something people are looking for and met some very sweet people in the process! Yea me!

I hope to post something wonderfully wonderful tomorrow! For tonight, I'm tired and sore, and ready for bed.

Startling News And a New B4&After

Hello Thursday!

Ready for some startling news? I'm serious! Brace yourselves! I, Christie, have never in my life used Mod Poge! I know! How in the world was I ever an art teacher and not know how to use Mod Podge! Sad, but true! And I must confess, it took a little to figure it out! Once I figured out it is just like hanging wall paper, it went so much more smoothly...including the sheet music!

One really cool thing about this little table is the sheet music! The music is printed with blue ink. Very cool! And how ironic, but the title of the piece is "Which Way America?" I was starting to feel the whole "America the Beautiful" "Red, White, & Blue" thing. Had a hard time deciding on painting it red or cream. Cream won this time. Next one I do, will be red...or navy...no red...Oh who knows! Maybe one of each :)

Have to once again give kudos to Miss Mustard Seed! Don't you just love all the ideas Miss Mustard Seed can stir up? From sheet music to moss...wax to trim...she's covered the gamete on products, tips, and tricks. I just love it when someone else has shared their successes and failures (though I wouldn't quite call them failures)...saves me time! Which in turn, allows me to do what I do best! CREATE!...and shop:) And that's just what I did with this little table!
I'm not quite sure what this table was used for originally. It could have been a telephone table, but most likely a night stand. And oh is it HEAVY! I think the dresser I bought the other day weighs less lol~

Hello Ya'll!

I know we all have done this, so I'm going to be brave and confess.

Has the green eyed jealousy monster ever crept up on you when reading a post from someone who has had great Craigslist fortune? I admit it! I have MANY times...sad to say. But today, I was the blessed one who had the good fortune land in my lap!

I was getting ready to hop in the car and drive an hour + to go and "see" about a dresser. You know what I mean when I say "see". The dresser you're about to drive across the state for isn't exactly what your looking for...but it could do. It's not quite the style, looks like the veneer is popping a little... And to add to the torture of not knowing if you are really going to come home with the dresser after the long drive is the price is a little too high. This was me this morning...then just by happen stance, I peaked once more at Craigslist, praying for a miracle...(the said dresser would be sold...or the Hallelujah moment that actually happened to ME!)

I hop on CL, pull up my usual search requirements...and then THERE IT IS! Like a diamond shining so brightly I need some Maui Jim's to protect my eyes! The PERFECT dresser & highboy! Not one, but TWO!

Oh the detailing! Dovetailing! Beautiful mirror! AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: ALL THE DRAWER PULLS! Lol! Yes, my jaw dropped and I fumbled for the phone as quickly as I could! The listing was only 30 minutes old, but where I come from...that is like forever! I dial....the nice man answers!!! YES! And I can come right then! It's only a 45 minute drive! And the price...well that would be a sin to tell you! Oh how blessed I was today! I am still in shock and awe of this beautiful find! I just can't wait to do something with it...but it's going to have to be amazing...no angelic! lol!

So no green eyed jealousy monster here today! Just me, smiling to myself...happy as the little chickadees outside my window.

Amazing B4&After

Hello!

Remember these? Yep! How could anyone forget these! Well, the initial story is here if you would like to take a peak!

Then I thought I had an awesome idea about a tutorial on removing veneer with a heat gun...and then my lap top died! All my hard work, time, editing! GONE! You can read all about that here!

These two pieces are like the little engine that could! No matter what was thrown at me, they just kept popping into my head...like they were calling my name lol~

Well so much has happened with these two pieces, you are simply not going to believe what I have to share with you today!

After many sleepless nights trying to decide what to do with these two, I have finally finished them. YES! From start to finish! And all in just the nick of time with me moving into the new shop! So with out further a due, I am so proud as peas to introduce you to my latest B4&After.

Can you believe these are the same pieces? With all that water damage, and peeling veneer? And I even found a little sewing bench that fits perfectly with the vanity/desk.
I'm sure once upon a time there was a beautiful mirror that went with this set. Unfortunately, I never got to see it. In place of the mirror I used a 1x2 trimmed down to match the existing piece on the chest of drawers. I simply can't get over how nice these turned out. And I can't wait to get them in the shop tomorrow so they can find a new home to love them!

Ok, so we all have been to a garage sale, estate sale, barn sale (my fav!), or auction and the auctioneer holds up a sad broken piece of ___________ (fill in the blank). It's kinda like a car accident... you can't help but look at the item...scratch your head and wonder... and oh the things you will wonder! That is what my latest B4&Happily Ever After is all about today!

A very good friend of mine, Pam, and I went garage sale-ing a couple weeks ago. We were on our last stop when I came across this sad little table. It was screaming my name! CHRISTIE! CHRISTIE! PICK ME UP! I'M WORTH YOUR TIME! PLEASE CHRISTIE! DON'T PASS ME BY!... You get the picture :) So I picked up the car accident and carried it home...Pam just rolled her eyes. :)

Surprisingly, this little table was very sturdy but the top veneer had seen better days long ago. After a few hours work, the table turned from car accident to this!

Yes, this top is vintage sheet music. Yes, I stole the idea from Miss Mustard Seed. Yes, you can do this too!
Another find that day are the super cool retro folding sport glasses & of course my silver plated coffee pot and vintage Irish crystal.

I used Valspar Lincoln Top Hat satin paint with BIN primer as a base coat. After painting, I distressed the finish and aged it with walnut Minwax gel stain. Once dried, I used Minwax Wax and a Poly acrylic top coat on the sheet music. I just love how it turned out & can't wait to show you what's next!

I know in many of my posts I have mentioned "the shop" and have never mentioned the name, other than Carter's Cottage Interiors. Well, that's because the shop has consisted of my basement, living room, office, studio, and garage! But now, "the shop" has a whole new meaning!

Friday I will be moving into one of the cutest shops in Batavia, Illinois! Eclectibles!! I am so excited to have found a new home, and in the most perfect location right on the river! The owner, Judy, is such a character! She had me laughing and smiling from the time I walked and for days after I left! I just couldn't wait to go back! Her charm and wit just pours form ever corner of her shop! I am so excited to be her latest addition to the Eclectibles Family! If you are in the area, stop by next week and take a peak, shop, and enjoy some great conversation with Judy. We will be having an open house in a few weeks once we are moved in and settled! I'll keep you posted!

Oh, I know I haven't really posted much on the way of B4&Afters. I'm saving them for the great reveal on move in day! Stay tuned!

Today's Finds!

The last time I went out blindly searching for treasure, my sister quipped I didn't have much. That pushed me to have an entry titled "Things to Come!". I had and still have so much, but tis the season for treasure huntin!
Today, I thought instead of a snippet of what I found, I would give you the whole shebang! (Gloria, this one's for you Girl!)

Have you ever been so excited about a treasure that you just had to call one of your besties to share in the excitement? Well that was me today! I tried all my friends, family, and even a neighbor, but no one answered. I was so bummed and with the excitement building I was about to burst! Then I thought " if only I could get to my blog, I'm sure someone out there in blog land would share in my excitement over this!" And this is what it was!

Well, honestly, I'm not quite sure what I have here! lol~ But I would sure love to know! If you happen to know what treasure I've found, please share with me! It appears to be silver plate maybe? I'm just not sure. There are 4 different stamps on the bottom. One stamp is "BSCEP". Another is "5525". The third is an image of a dragon, a flower and a crown while the 4th I can't make out. It doesn't really matter to me that I can't make it out or don't know what I've found. I think it's pretty cool even if it's only worth the $ I paid to get it! It's not overly heavy, and it's not metal as my bitty girl took her magnets and tested it. The initials are FMC...which is kinda interesting as Mr. Cottage's initials are MC...two outta 3 isn't bad :)

So that was find #1. And here is find #2!

Glass wine bottles with the bottoms cut off! The largest one stands about 24" tall, and the other two are 20" & 18". I just LOVE them! They are a spin off the cloche's that are all the rage now. And I did buy more than just these 3...but not as many as I would have liked! These are going to be PERFECT in the shop!!! I think I'm going to have to refine "Glass wine bottles with the bottoms cut off"...doesn't sound too appealing huh~

Now please understand I would never, under normal excitable circumstances ever share with you something that isn't cleaned & staged...but my excitement got the best of me...these cloche's are dirty, the silver tea pot has a ton of polish in all the crevasses, and the...Oh! My other two finds!!! I forgot to take a pic of those! I guess I will have to save something for tomorrow to share with you! (I digress....) What I meant to say was, I enjoy creating beautiful vignettes and in the excitement of the day, with no one to share it with, I decided to share even my dirty little finds with you, my friends!

And Hello to Blog Land!

Can I just say how excited I am about this next treasure I found! Oh! She is stunning! I'm sure you will agree!
Not that it's hard to find, but it is getting harder to find antiques in such exceptional condition as this! No chipps in the finish, no water marks, very few scuffs...simply gorgeous!

When I walked into the room of the estate sale, my jaw dropped (THUD!)! My good friend who was with me at the time, was startled and rushed over to make sure I was truly alright! I just stood there with stars in my eyes! It was as if no one else in the world existed except for myself and this gorgeous lill table.

Then, as quickly as my jaw dropped, I sprang into action! I nearly jumped an 8 foot table piled high with crystal and antique glass wear to swoop down and grab this beauty! As I turned around cradling my new found treasure, I could hear the guy behind me curse under his breath...I politely smiled and cooed to myself over my find!

Isn't treasure hunting AWESOME! Oh how I love the thrill of the hunt! Is this what hunters feel when they are freezing in their deer stands? Hum...don't think I'll be hunting anytime soon..for deer that is!

To Prime, or Not to Prime? That is the Question!

Ok, so I admit. That was a little dramatic...ok, a lot dramatic! If you have ever painted a piece of furniture, I'm sure you have asked yourself this very same question. I would love to know your answer! I'm kinda a not to prime kinda gal. However, with all the pieces I currently am working on, I think I'm turning into a prime kinda gal!

And all of this brings on a whole new question...What kinda of primer do you prefer? There are many to choose from....and from experience, I am not a Zinzer gal. In fact, I really haven't found one I do like. I'm thinking of trying the Benjamine Moore Super Primer. Have any of you tried this primer?

Enlighten me! PLEASE!

Good Bye Mr. Underwood No. 5!

Good Evening!

As many of you already know, I'm new to all this! And everyday I check in, I have something exciting to share! Today I had my very first Etsy sale! It went something like this.

After milling around the house, I thought I should check my email. Truly, I've been checking it more often as I just can't wait to see if anyone has left me a note or shared a funny with me! So, I get on my email and it never ceases to amaze me how much junk email I get! I was tossing out Areo, Justice, and Gap junk when I saw this little email from my paypal account. I paused for a moment thinking to my self, "What did Mr. Cottage buy?" better yet, "What did Mr. Cottage sell??" Then...there it was...like a star twinkling in the night....My lill heart went pitter patter! Then when I actually read what it was for, I nearly fell out of my chair! I was so excited! Now I could go shop at this estate sale I've been drooling over for the past week! YEA! More treasures to find and share!

You know, I never realized how excited I could possibly get over one of my treasures finding a new home. Now that I have a few sales under my belt, I am so excited and hope that my lill treasures bring as much joy to the new owners as it has me! So Good Bye Mr. Underwood No. 5! I hope you enjoy sunny California! You have spent nearly all your life in cold northern Illinois, you deserve to retire some place as nice as Cali!

Things to come!

Hello Everyone!

First, let me say a huge THANK YOU to all the helpful hints that were passed to me about my crashed laptop and lost Picasa pictures! I found almost all my pictures! YEA! I still don't know what happened to the others, but hey, they aren't all lost! As for my laptop, the hard drive is toast! I'm hoping I will get a huge surprise and get an upgraded graphics card when I get my trusty ol laptop back! That would be SWEET!

Secondly, another huge THANK YOU to all my Followers! I know, I know... You're thinking I'm a little out there to be thanking my followers. Well, I wasn't sure if this little blog and new adventure of mine would actually take off. And when I got my first few followers, who weren't family or neighbors, I felt like a celebrity! (You could say I'm easily amused, and you would be right!) Your kind comments, encouragement, and helpful hints help me grow professionally, and personally. I hope my Followers grow and grow so I can continue to learn and share my expertise too!

As for my little adventure, well, in less than one months time, I have sold 4 pieces of furniture! I am SHOCKED and elated! Vintage furniture has been a passion of mine since I was 9 and has only grown since then!
It all started when I would take our elderly neighbor, Ms. Fitchen her mail every day and visit with her. As a treat once in a while she would make SPAM with brown sugar for dinner. Boy was that a treat! I thought I was in heaven as we never had SPAM at our house. There were many things at Ms. Fitchens house that we never had. Like an indoor cat, fine china and crystal at every dinner, and the most beautiful furniture I have ever seen.

Ms. Fitchen seemed to be older than anyone else I knew. Age was just a number as her stories would transport us back to a time when she was a flapper dancing & drinking the night away. I loved sitting listening to her stories. When Ms. Fitchen passed, she left me my first real piece of furniture, a solid birds eye maple dresser, and my first crystal wine glass.

The glass was broken in one of the many moves I have made since I married, and the dresser...well I passed that down to my daughter when she turned 7. Yes, it shows it's age, but it is the first piece that created who I am.

And finally, I thought I would give you a sneak peak of things to come from Carter's Cottage. A few days ago, my sister posted that I didn't really have much.... Well, she hasn't seen my garage, basement, or studio! All the pics in this post are of pieces I am working on or hope to be working on soon! I really need to get some pieces done for the shop! April will be here before you know it and my shop will be sitting empty!

Oh, and yes, these are just snippets of the furniture...I want to keep you in suspense so you will visit often to see what's new!

My 1st Tutorial...or so I thought...

Good Morning!

I wish I could say that with great enthusiasm, but truth be told I can't! I woke up this morning to a blown up laptop! Yep! This is the second time this has happened, so I'm hoping there is a "warranty" since it only lasted 4 months :( Perhaps my darling bitty girl is correct in saying, "Just by a new one Mom! That one's JUNK!"

So, the story begins
There are many tutorials out there about painting, stripping... finishes (had to word that one carefully lol~), slip covers, and tons of others that are awesome and very insightful, but very few address removing veneer. You know, that thin layer of expensive wood that over time has been destroyed on top of the bones of the sturdy little piece? I know from experience I have avoided those pieces like the plague as I was just too afraid to tackle them.
Then, I came across this sad set from a guy down on his luck and donated some cash to him in trade for the plagued pieces. My next thought was "I CAN DO THIS!?". Another thought that quickly followed was "If I can do this, I should make this my 1st tutorial!" Off I went!

You may remember this piece:

As you can see I had already started lifting the veneer, and then life happened and the project was put on hold.
With the warmer weather yesterday, I decided to dive back in and in the process, and document a tutorial.
This piece has a sister dresser in equally as poor shape which is the one I started on yesterday...it was at the front of the garage while this desk was at the very back piled under :)

I worked on it, photographed it, edited the photos, and then saved everything on my lap top to resume the tutorial today...and then BOOM! It happened! AGAIN! My laptop blew up! So, all my work is buried in a laptop that is completely froze! And of course I did not save to our external hard drive! And of course I deleted all my pics off my camera! And of course...well I can't think of anything more terrible than that, but for sake of making this post as drama filled as possible, I had to say it just one more time :)

I love my little laptop! It was the first thing I put AutoCAD on. My first design boards, floor plans, client information, dates, projects, rejected jobs...yes I keep those too as they are a stepping stone that built my design business! So I'm not having a "good morning". But, it's not that bad and I can make the tutorial even better, maybe a movie!

My little family is so blessed! We have a roof over our heads, warm cozy beds, and food on the table. And right now there is an entire country without that.

1st B4&After

Hello!
Can I just start by saying how excited I am to have my very first B4&After finished???!!! This has been a long time in the making...well a long time for me anyway!

Here is this cute little shield arm chair! It was so sad and broken when I first found it! Joints had come loose over time, the cushion had seen better days....a few decades ago! But I saw the potential this lill beauty had! And after a little wood glue and clamps, new cushioning and upholstery, a little paint and stain, it blossomed into this!

Can I just say, WOW! I so love this! And I'm having a hard time putting it in the shop! But, I have other projects, and chairs, and can't wait to get to those.

It's always good to hear from others out there in blog land!

Time for a change!

Here in Northern Illinois, the winter can be long, bitter cold, and seem to last forever! And I'm not one of those people who is ready for the snow to melt the second it hits the ground. My family and I enjoy the snow and all the fun it brings. But after this weekend of catching the flu, I have decided it's time for ol Man Winter to pack his snow and head home! I'm yearning for tulips, daffodils, open windows, and the smell green grass! I'm sure it hasn't helped that I got my new paint gun too!

A little more about Me...............
Though I have been in design for over 15 years, I have never taken it to the next level. Most likely because I'm not quite sure what the next level is. I'm hoping that this blog will help me do that. In my past design careers, the designs were all glass and chrome, new, & contemporary. In addition, most of the spaces were for commercial use. So the aesthetics were geared toward the masses and built to be indestructible. Not that there is anything wrong with that! It's just I wouldn't say it's my style. I'm more in the realm of warm and inviting classic relaxed home style...make any sense? lol~ I hope to blend seamlessly treasures from yesterday with the convinces of today.

Many of the projects I have accumulated over the last month...are just that....PROJECTS! And I love that! I love a great project! And love it even more when the project is finished! With this long NI winter, my projects are starting to pile up! I hope to get out today and make some headway so I can post some fantastic after shots of the goodies I've come across.

I will try to thaw, and continue to scout for more treasures!

Driving for inspiration....

Have you ever been driving down the road and just let your mind wonder? Not that I'm suggesting that...but I grew up in a small pin dot on the map top kinda town, and after miles of fields your mind can begin to wonder and inspiration can well up at the sight of golden maize in a field, a vintage Chevy truck that's found a home in an old weather beaten barn, or the beautiful blue flame licked with orange and yellows burning off gas from the oil wells. I miss my old stomping grounds and will be going for a visit this weekend! And I'm hoping I can find inspiration there! In reality, I'm positive I can! And as a bonus, it's supposed to be a balmy 48*! Yes, balmy for me up here in Northern Illinois! (25* as I type this :)

You may be wondering for what I am looking inspiration for....let me just show you the interesting little piece I picked up the other day.

I KNOW! It's a total MESS! What have I gotten myself into??? Well, this is where the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" comes to play...and I'm sure after 10 hours of driving (round trip of course...Illinois isn't that long lol~), I will be filled with ideas to transform this into beauty!

As you can see, I've actually already started on this piece. I think the previous owner had plants on it as there was water damage to the top. Luckily, the bones of these two pieces are solid as a rock! It even still has the vintage caster wheels! I just love those!

So, time to get to know YOU! What inspires you? Where do you find your "What have I gotten myself into" pieces? Or how about this one...how do you get the kids to stop fighting in the car for these road trips? lol~

As promised, here are a few more pictures of my lill Smith-Corona Clipper. While I was taking the extra pictures of the Clipper, I noticed there's no #1 key! I have looked many a typewriter....old and new but never noticed that there was no #1 key. So that prompted me to look for the exclamation point, missing too!

Now I know what some of you may be thinking...and she considers herself an experienced in vintage and antiques? Well, yes...and no. Typewriters, no. Certain period furniture, yes. The key, pardon the pun, is I know when to ask questions. So another way to look at it is when I'm lost, yes I stop and ask for directions~lol!

Back to my lil clipper....

After further research, I found a few interesting facts I thought were worth sharing with you. First, the exclamation point was created with an apostrophe, then backspace, and then add a period. Neat right??!!
And the number zero was generated with an uppercase 'O'. Similarly, a lowecase 'L' served dual purpose as a one. Isn't that just swell?

There are a few interesting keys on this clipper. For example there is a 1/4 1/2 combination key. The one I find most interesting is the @ symbol shares a key with the cent symbol! Betchya can't find that on any computer! (sorry for the flash on the key...it's there, and it's way cool) Oh...and I must mention the Floating Shift!

As I mentioned in my original post...or at least I think I mentioned this, this typewriter has metal keys that are black with ivory letters. They are very pretty and in very good condition. I'm having trouble coming up with a market value on this piece as I have not seen any Clippers with metal keys. If you have one, or can send me information on them, that would be great! So, it could be a good thing they are hard to find, or a bad thing...just depends on if you're the type of person with the glass half full, or empty :) *SOLD! My lill Clipper has found a new home! Check back as you never know what I will find!*
